S/South re-launches struggle for resource control

Addressing the media in Abuja, the South-South caucus said it would soon come up with the appropriate percentage of derivation to be paid to the oil producing states by the Federal Government, disclosing that it had started the process of consultation on the issue.

The caucus set agenda for the Federal Government on the modalities for developing the South-South zone, especially after the surrendering of arms by the militants.

The spokesperson for the group, Honorable Andrew Uchendu, told the Umaru Yar’Adua-led government to begin the process of rehabilitation of the oil producing states in Nigeria by laying the structure for massive development of the area.

He asked for the construction of roads and bridges to key towns and communities, stressing that the development of Niger Delta coastal roads to link the entire region should be considered as a top priority in the plans by the government to develop.

He also listed the establishment of a railway network, creation of major development centers in most areas in the creeks and the establishment of Maritime Security Agency, as key developmental initiatives, the Federal Government must undertake without delay.
